BioI have always said that my purpose in writing has been a private and domestic one, intended for the pleasure of my relatives and friends so that, when they have lost me, as soon they must, they may recover some features of my character and disposition, and thus keep the memory they have of me more completely and vividly alive.
Being so far myself the substance of my writings, I could so see no reason why one should waste their leisure on so frivolous and unrewarding a subject. But I find in most recent days this spirit to have multiplied a million-fold, an unfathomableness which I would have told you, with an assurance already utter in youth and increasing through each of my 550 years, would have been the final darkening of the world, except for the inexplicable retention of that most volatile of topical compounds, honesty.
Greetings, then, from Montaigne, this ever-incrementing day.
